Fuel is by far the biggest running cost of any diesel generator. In the UAE, where generators often run long hours, small efficiency gains add up fast. Here's how to reduce diesel generator fuel consumption.
1. Size the generator correctly
An oversized set runs under-loaded and wastes fuel; an undersized one strains. Right-sizing is the single biggest saving — see our generator sizing guide.
2. Keep the load above ~30%
Running below a third of capacity is inefficient and causes wet-stacking. Match the generator to the real load.
3. Maintain it well
Clean air filters, healthy injectors and the correct oil keep combustion efficient. A neglected engine burns more fuel.
4. Use an ATS and shut down when idle
Don't let a generator idle needlessly. An automatic transfer switch runs it only when required.
5. Manage the load
Stagger heavy loads and switch off non-essential equipment so the generator runs at an efficient operating point.
6. Store and handle fuel properly
Contaminated or old diesel reduces efficiency and damages the engine. Keep tanks clean and water-free.
